INSIDER THREAT IDENTIFICATION
INSIDER THREAT IDENTIFICATION (ITI) is a class developed to train employees to identify insider threats by spotting displayed behavioral threat indicators that may indicate an individual could potentially become an insider threat or has initiated the process of planning an active shooter attack. Insider threats are fast becoming the largest dangers to organizations. The likelihood of a random attack by a stranger is low, yet the chances of a disgruntled or distressed employee attacking their employer is very high. This is not a new concept, but these attacks are becoming more and more frequent all the time.
It is vital to an organization’s safety and security that their employees have the tools and knowledge to distinguish normal, unthreatening behavior from behavior that might precipitate an insider threat or attack. The current list of behavioral threat indicators is derived from psychology and behavioral science and represent behaviors that, when combined, may show a person is in a distressed state and may lash out in violence. It is important to note that these behaviors are not independently actionable, just because someone is late to work does not mean they are planning an attack. We teach what combinations and levels of severity each behavior represents, when they pose a significant risk, and how your people should react to them.
This class discusses how to spot the behaviors leading to an attack, the psychology behind these indicators, steps to take to prevent the individual from worsening, who to report the behavior to, how to document reports, and how to deal with false alarms. These are similar to the indicators and techniques that our instructors taught to hundreds of servicemembers prior to deployment to combat zones or hostile areas but tailored to a civilian world. We also examine security procedures that need to be in place after terminating or removing and individual that could be a potential insider threat.
